When he was about 8, Mike's dad built a plywood skiff from plans out of poplar mechanics. It was set up to convert between rowing and sailing, and you could mount an outboard. It was on Yaquina Bay that he learned how to sail. As a dad joke, he named it “Ashore” (as in Michael row your boat).
